Dr. Harold Saxton Burr (1889-1973) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 10, 1889.  His early years were spent in Springfield, Massachusetts.  In 1908 he was admitted to the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale.  He received his Ph. B. degree in 1911 and his Ph. D. in 1915.  He continued his association with that school as an Instructor of Anatomy in 1914, an Assistant Professor in 1919, an Associate Professor in 1926, and Professor in 1929.  Burr lived in New Haven during all of these years.

It was when school was closed for summer vacation that he, his wife Jean, and son Peter came to Lyme and stayed at the home of his grandfather.  There he painted seven days a week.  Boats and water were his main subject matter.  He also painted landscapes of the Lyme countryside.  

He was a friend of artist George Bruestle and his early landscapes show that influence.  He later painted more frequently in pastel rather than oil and these paintings became more abstract in design.

He was a member of the Lyme Art Association where he exhibited from 1926-1946 and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club from 1930-1946.
