In Lyme: 1928 -
Joseph M. Gionfriddo was born on April 14, 1907 in Conicattini Bagni, Italy. His parents went to America leaving their children in the care of their grandparents. They sent money back for their sons’ education at the neighboring academy. When they finished their apprenticeship there Gionfriddo’s parents brought the children to America to live. Thus, at the age of thirteen he was living in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended the Brown School where he learned the English language and then found a job as a barber. He painted during his free time decorating the barbershop where he worked. He began attending an evening art class and there he met James McManus studying with him for the next two years. It was McManus who persuaded him to join the Connecticut League of Art Students.
In 1928 he went to Lyme with one of McManus’ classes. He loved the area and began to accompany McManus there every time the latter returned. In 1931 he studied there in a class taught by McManus and Guy Wiggins.
He won the Tiffany Scholarship in Oyster Bay, Long Island, and the Guy Williams Scholarship in Lyme, Connecticut. He has exhibited at the American Federation of Arts Show in Washington D.C. He won the Wadsworth Atheneum Charles Noel Flagg prize for best work shown by a member.
He is a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Springfield Art League.
