Charles Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran (1837-1917) was born in Lille to a working class family. At the age of eleven he studied with Lille sculptor Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupre. He was then apprenticed to Francois Souchon for two years. In 1853 he moved to Paris. He made his Salon debut in 1859. In 1860 he won the Wicar Prize. He went to live in Rome in 1862 and stayed through 1866. He won a medal there at the 1866 Salon. He had a one-man exhibition with the Cercle des Mirlitrons in 1874-75. He was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the Palais de Luxembourg.
He was a founder member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He was elected its president in 1900. In 1904 he became a member of the Institut de France and the Directorship of the Academie de France in Rome. He died in Paris in 1917.
