Platt Hubbard

(November 2, 1889–May 8, 1946) In Lyme: c. 1920 - 1946
Platt Hubbard was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 2, 1889. He studies art at the Columbus Art School and befriended other artists such as George Bellows. In his late teens, Hubbard moved to New York to study with the notable American painter Robert Henri. Hubbard continued his studies in Paris where he maintained a studio from 1911 until 1932. Between his periodic stays in Paris, Hubbard painted and traveled throughout France, Italy and the Orient.

On one of his visits home, Hubbard was introduced to the Lyme countryside by his lifelong friend Walter Magee. Hubbard settled in the area and built a studio near the corner of Saunders Hollow and Neck Roads. He became actively involved with the Lyme Art Association and served for many years as its treasurer.

Once in Old Lyme, the focus of Hubbard's art work became copper plate etchings. hubbard's skill as a draftsman and printer as well as an artist were superb. He is now best know for his etchings of trees dramatically silhouetted against the landscape.

Platt Hubbard died suddenly in Old Lyme at the age of 56. He was honored for his work, however, before he died by the Division of Graphic Arts of the Smithsonian Institution and the Society of American Etchers.
