James Gale Tyler
Marine Painter
(1855–1931)
James Tyler studied with the marine artist, A. Cary Smith and contributed marine art studies for illustration in Harpers and Century magainzes. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club (NYC), and is represented in several museum collections including the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Morris Museum of Arts, and the Mariner's Museum.

Tyler painted pictures of every America's Cup race since 1900, and his illustrations appeared in Harper's Century, and Literary Digest. He spent most of his life in New York City, but during the mid 1880s had a studio in Providence, Rhode Island.

In 1930, at age 75, he made his last coverage of the races off Newport which were later shown at the Union League Club. His marine pictures were so popular that he repeated in a formulaic way his theme of a sailing ship returning to harbor at night. During his lifetime, forgeries of his work were discovered.
