Richard Brooks
Marine Artist
Richard Brooks, an Essex resident known for his historical marine and Connecticut River paintings, was inspired by the beauty and historical value of the Griswold House, a landmark building. He is an active member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the Rockport Art Association, and the Copley Society.
After many years in commercial art, Brooks returned to his first vocation, marine painting and etching. A native of Glouchester, Massachusetts, he began painting on the rocks and wharves of Cape Ann, studying with impressionist Emile Gruppe. At Dartmouth he worked with regionalist Paul Sample who was then Artist in Residence.
In addition to his oils, Brooks produces aquatint etchings on zinc plates. He has had one-man shows in Bermuda where he lived for six years. And his works are in regional museums such as Mystic Seaport and the Connecticut River Museum, as well as private collections.
