Hudson River School

Frederic Church was a native of Hartford, and for many scholarshe was America's most important landscape painter. He was one of the great romantic American artists of the latter half of the 19th Century, and a leader of the second generation of Hudson River school painters. (This second group did not stop at the Hudson Valley and New England, but searched all the way to California for their subjects.) Artist-explorer Church roamed the world; South America, the West Indies, Europe and Palestine. One of his most famous works, Icebergs, was painted off the coast of Labrador. He was keenly interested in botany, geology and meteorology, as well as art; and he incorporated much of his self-learned knowledge into the small canvases he painted on his frequent trips.
