Benjamin Coe was born in Hartford, and during his lifetime built a reputation both as a landscape painter and as a teacher. He was Frederic Church's first teacher, and for many years taught drawing in New York and other Northeastern cities. He pubished a number of books about drawing: Easy Lessons in Landscape Drawing, A New Drawing Book of American Scenery, and Drawing Book of Trees among them; and he exhibited regularly at the National Academy from 1846-1863.
