Thomas Cole came to America with his family from Lancashire, England, when he was 17. He had worked as an apprentice to a calico print designer in Britain, and here he studied two years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before settling in New York in 1825. That same year he made the first of many sketching trips up the Hudson River valley, eventually settling in the village of Catskill in 1846. His artistic ideas were influenced by a trip to Europe from 1829 to 1832. In London, he became interested in the panoramas, a type of painting displayed on huge winding rolls. This interest may have led him to produce his great multipaneled works. Together with Thomas Doughty and Asher Durand, Cole is remembered as a founder of one of the most important American schools of painting: the Hudson River school.
