Leon Dabo

American, (1868–1960)
Leon Dabo's father had been a teacher of aesthetics in France; and he gave the boy, who was born in Detroit, his first art instruction. By the time young Leon was in his teens, he was apprenticed to a man who decorated church interiors; and a few years later he traveled to Paris and attended both the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Academie Julian. He studied later in Italy, then returned to New York City in his mid-20s and began producing murals. In 1900 he turned to landscape painting which showed clear influences of Whistler. He was particularly fond of sunrises and sunsets along the Hudson River. His paintings of the river and New York Harbor brought him prominence.
