Alvan Fisher
(1792–1863)
Alvan Fisher spent his early years in Dedham, Massachusettes, and as a boy, worked in a country store. He apparently tired of clerking and apprenticed himself to a Boston painter. He began his career in art as a portrait painter, but when he was in his 20s he started a series of barnyard and stable scenes which made him a pioneer in genre and landscape painting in America. He traveled throughout New England to sketch and paint; and toured the South, painting race horses on commission. In his 30s he went abroad to study then returned to Boston.
