William Henry Lippincott was born in Philadelphia and as a young man studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He became an illustrator and, later, a scenic artist. He went to Paris in his mid-20s, and stayed eight years - studying and exhibiting regularly in the city's salons. In his early 30s he returned to America and established a studio in New York. He taught at the National Academy for some years, and was a consistent exhibitor at art shows in this country until his death in New York at age 71.
