Charles Russell Loomis

American, (1857–1936)
Charles Russell Loomis was born in Windsor, Connecticut and lived there until he was eight, when the family moved to Hartford. At 19, he enrolled in the Yale School of Fine Arts, commuting as a day student between Hartford and New Haven by railroad. In 1879 he received a certificate of completion for three years of study. His teacher, John Ferguson Weir, had noted that Charles was one of three students who excelled in his work. For several years after receiving his certificate, he stayed on to teach at Yale. He also painted in a studio in Hartford. Later he taught at the Hartford Art School. Starting in his 20s, Loomis kept a sketch book he called "Summer Hours in Different States", and traveled New England and New York state sketching and painting. His work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design and at the Boston Art Club.
