Nelson A. Moore

American, (1824–1902)
There is an anecdote about Nelson Moore that claims he was introduced to art under the spectacular circumstance of holding a light through a long night, while a painter completed a portrait of a child who had been killed in an accident. This brief and grisly apprenticeship is said to have been enough to prompt Moore, who was born in Kensington, Connecticut, to equip himself with canvas, paints and brushes and begin to study painting. When he was 22 he spent the winter drawing from plaster casts. Later he took up portrait painting. But by his mid 20s he had almost entirely given up portraits for landscape painting, making pastoral scenes of the Connecticut countryside a specialty.
