Ammi Phillips
American,
(1788–1865)
Ammi Phillips (pronounced Am-eye) was born in Colebrook, Connecticut. Not much is known about his early years, but his first portraits seem to have been painted when he was 23. From 1813-1820 he worked in eastern New York, western Massachusettes, and Connecticut, and became well-known in those areas for his portraits of children. In the 1830s most of his work was done around Kent, Connecticut. Until the end of his life he continued to paint in New York state and in New England, and he was known both as "the border limner" and "the Kent limner". His clients were relations, neighbors, friends and their families. By any standard, Phillips was the most prolific and inventive American folk portrait painter of the 19th century. His work has become among the most sought-after in the folk art field.
