Charles Adams Platt

American, (1861–1933)
Charles Platt was best known for his etchings, but also worked in oil and in watercolor. He was born in New York City and studied both at the National Academy of Design and in Paris. Little else is known about his youth or his career, but a 1907 exhibition catalogue for a New York gallery has this to say about him: "In the recent exhibition of the Society of American Etchers at the Academy of Design (Mr. Platt) showed a number of views of Holland, but with them at least one American subject.

In 1877 he settled in Cornish, New Hampshire, where he worked with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and developed a reputation as an etcher of great techinical skill.. He built himself a house and studio with accompanying gardens, which led eventually to a career in landscape gardening and architecture. He designed a number of houses and gardens, including the Lyme Art Association gallery in Connecticut, and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
