Charles Ethan Porter
American,
(1847–1923)
Charles Ethan Porter, during the course of a highly successful career as a painter of still lifes, distinguished himself as a leading African American artist. After early training at the National Academy of Design in New York, he returned to his native Hartford and kept a studio on Main Street. His still lifes were traditional compositions of fruit and flower arrangements, sometimes in natural settings. Frederic Church visited the studio in 1879, admired the work, and bought some for his own collection. When he was 31, Porter left for Europe with a letter of recommendation from Samuel Clemens. He spent four years abroad, mostly in Paris, and then returned to Hartford and finally settled in Rockville, Connecticut.
