James David Smillie
American,
(1833–1909)
James David Smillie was born in New York City, the eldest son in a family of engravers and painters. His younger brother, George, was a well-known landscape painter. James was best known during his lifetime for his etchings, dry points, aquatints, and lithographs. In his later years, though, he also won admirers for his landscapes, which were clearly influenced by the Hudson River school. Even his paintings showed a certain dryness, which probably had been carried over from his years as an engraver - a vocation that began when he was only 8 and continued until he was 31. Indeed, even after he took up painting, he continued to produce an occasional engraving. Aside from a couple of trips to France and some tours to America's mountain ranges, Smillie spent his entire life in New York City.
