John Ferguson Weir
American,
(1841–1926)
John Ferguson Weir, along with his brother J. Alden Weir, were the sons of a noted artist who was an instructor of art at West Point. Like his brother, he was born at the Academy. He and J. Alden both received their art instruction from their father; and then John went off to New York City. His first year there he earned $200 for paintings and another $100 from THE NEW YORK EVENING POST. Not a bad year in those days. When he was 29, he went abroad to study; but not long after he arrived, he received an offer of a professorship in painting at Yale University. He cut the trip short and took the job, and was a well-known Yale teacher for many years.
