J. Alden Weir

American, (1852–1919)
J. Alden Weir, along with his brother, John Ferguson Weir were the sons of a noted artist who was an instructor of art at West Point. Like his brother, he was born at the Academy. He and John Ferguson both received their early art instruction from their father and then J. Alden went on to study at the National Academy of Design. Finally, he went to Paris to work with Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After his rigorous academic training there, he was appalled at the new Impressionism when he first saw it in 1877. He began visiting Connecticut in the early 1880s when he fell in love with a New York woman whose family had a second home in Windham Center. They married and moved into a house in Ridgefield. Nine years later, his wife died, leaving him with three young daughters. The next year he married his wife's sister. By the time of his death, J. Alden Weir was renowned as an American Impressioist.
