Edwin White
American,
(1817–1877)
Edwin White was apparently something of a child prodigy; he began to paint when he was just 12, and was exhibiting at the National Academy by his early 20s. He was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, but as a young man moved first to Bridgeport, Connecticut and then to New York. He was elected to the National Academy of Design as an associate when he was 31, and became a full member (an Academician) the following year. He went abroad in his mid-30s, to study in Dusseldorf, Paris, Rome and Florence; and he returned to Europe in his 50s. He was particularly well-known for his historical works.
