Lucius Barnes was born on August 1, 1819 in Middletown, Connecticut. At about age 4 he was afflicted with a spinal disease which left him with only the use of his hands and toes. Confined to a wheelchair for most of his life, Barnes drew seven known likenesses of his 96 year old grandmother when he was probably 15 years old. He died two years later on September 9, 1836.
