(1826–1900)
Frederic Edwin Church, one of the preeminent 19th century American painters, was born in 1826 in Hartford, Connecticut. He began drawing and painting before the age of 16 and became the first pupil of the renowned Thomas Cole. In 1844 he had established residence in Catskill, New York, to be near Cole, where he remained until 1846. His period of study with Cole fostered his tremendous devotion to nature, which he considered to be the prime subject of his paintings.

From 1844 to 1846, although residing in Catskill, it is known that he made numerous trips back to the Hartford area in the course of which he made sketches for the paintings he did of scenes of Connecticut.
