Sewell Sillman
mid-20th century Print
American, (1921–1992)
Sillman was born in Georgia in 1921. He studied at Black Mountain College with Josef Albers, and then at Yale, graduating in 1952. After obtaining his MFA from Yale he joined the faculty there, where he was to remain until 1966, later teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania. Sillman's work is primarily non-objective and ranges from sinuous ink drawings from the1950s and 1960s, suggestive of undulating natural shapes; bold and vibrant paintings of the late-1950s that explore the complexity of geometrical forms and the effect of color; "portal" paintings of the 1960s that expand on the use of color; and, from the late-1970s onwards, watercolors and pen & ink drawings of an increasing size that distil much of the earlier paintings into simple and graceful works of precision and light.
