Phoebe Griffin Lord Noyes (1797-1875)
Phoebe Griffin Lord, raised in Lyme, studied miniature portrait painting as a young woman with Mme. Valliant in New York. After marrying Daniel Rogers Noyes, she settled permanently in her native town and for many years conducted a private school in her home. Admired as a portraitist and educator, she provided the first formal art instruction in Lyme, promoted an appreciation of art in the community, and fostered a cultural climate that would later draw many of the country’s most celebrated landscape painters to Old Lyme. The town’s public library, erected in 1898 on the site of her birth, bears her name and honors her legacy.
