Sheldon Pennoyer (1888-1957) was born in Oakland, California on April 5, 1888. He studied architecture at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He studied painting at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and at the Pennsylvania Academy.
He was a member of the Kent Art Association, American Watercolor Society, American Veteran’s Art Association, the Century Association, the National Arts Club, the Oakland Art Association and the San Francisco Art Association.
His work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, Pan-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, 1915, Corcoran Gallery biennial, 1923, and the Salons of America, 1924,1934.
His work is conserved at the Oakland Museum; Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan; California Palace of the Legion of Honor; de Young Museum; Santa Barbara Museum; Smithsonian Institution; U.S. Military Academy, West Point; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Pennoyer died in Madrid, Spain in 1957.
