Arthur Dawson

Arthur Dawson (1859- 1922) was a painter, etcher, writer, and critic. He was born on March 9, 1859 in Crewe, England. In 1883 he married Adelaide Kent of London. They came to the United States in 1887 and he later became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

He studied art at South Kensington School. He was a pupil of David Law and William Morris in London.

He had a studio in Chicago for ten years. He was a founder of the Chicago Society of Artists. He came to New York in 1898. He had charge of the restoration of pictures belonging to the Public Library, New York City. He was the official portrait painter for the U S Military Academy, West Point.

Dawson was a member of the Artists’ Fund Society, the Lotos Club, Authors’ Club, London; the Chicago Municipal Art Society, and the Chicago Society of Artists.

He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1898 and 1902. He was awarded a prize at the Pan-American exposition, Buffalo in 1901. He also exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists, 1917 and Art Institute of Chicago.

Arthur Dawson died in 1922 in Richmond, Virginia.
