Emile Albert Gruppe (1896-1978) was born on November 23, 1896 in Rochester, New York. He is the son of landscape painter Charles P. Gruppe.
He studied at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, Grande Chaumiere, Paris and with John F. Carlson, Richard Miller, George Bridgman, C. Chapman, and Charles Hawthorne.
Emile Gruppe is best known for his paintings of views of Rockport and of fishing boats docked at Gloucester and Rockport. In 1942 he founded the Gruppe Summer School, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
He was member of the Salmagundi Club, the North Shore Art Association, the Gloucester Society of Artists, the Rockport Art Association, the Allied Artists of America, the Longboat Key Art Association, the Sarasota Art Association, the Grand Central Art Gallery, and the Rochester Art Association. He was also a member of Audubon Artists, Northern Vermont Artists, New Haven Paint and Clay Club, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Meridan Arts and Crafts, St. Augustine Art Association, Academic Artists, Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Woodstock Art Association.
