(August 11, 1876–October 15, 1933)
In Lyme: c. 1918
Robert Dudley Fullonton (1876-1933) was born in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 1876. His early education took place in Paris. He then studied languages and philosophy at Harvard University and practiced civil engineering before turning to painting to earn his living.
He was a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association. His work was exhibited at the Lyme Art Association in 1918, Southern California Artists, and San Diego Fine Arts Gallery in 1927.
Fullonton did spend some time at the Griswold House in Old Lyme where he painted a wall panel of the California coastline. Allegedly Fullonton left without paying his bill and the panel was turned around and another artist painted on the other side.
From 1911 to 1916 he painted in Los Angeles. In 1916 he set up a studio in Laguna Beach. He remained there until his death on October 15, 1933 at the age of 57.
