George Glenn Newell (1870-1947) was born in 1870 in Berrien County, Michigan. He grew up in Grand Rapids. He graduated from Albion College, Michigan in 1890 and studied at Teachers College of Columbia University. He received his art training at the National Academy. In 1937 he was elected an Academician of the National Academy. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society. He was one of the founders of the Allied Artists of America. He was also a member of the American Society of Animal Painters, the Aquerellists, the Society of Painters of New York, the Lotos Club, National Arts Club, and the Salmagundi Club.
Pastoral landscapes were his specialty. He raised dogs and cattle and used the animals as models for his paintings.
His work is in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Art Association of Dallas, Detroit Institute of Arts, Grand Central Art Galleries, National Arts Club, Lotos Club, Salmagundi Club, and the National Academy of Design.
He won the Speyer Prize at the National Academy of Design, First Prize, National Arts Club, 1925, Gold Medal, Allied Artists of America, 1927, and First Prize, American Society of Animal Painters, 1929.
