Lyme Art Colony
(1865–May 1915) In Lyme: 1907-1921
Frederic Winthrop Ramsdell (1865-1915) was born in Manistee, Michigan. He studied at the Art Students League in New York under Carroll Beckwith and in Paris with R. Collin. He came to Lyme, Connecticut, in 1906 and was an active member of the Lyme Art Colony. He first exhibited with the Lyme Art Association in 1907. He spent his summers and autumns in his 1778 colonial home in Lyme and his winters in Manistee. He was known for his landscapes and marine subjects. Three of his paintings are in the permanent collection of the Florence Griswold Museum.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1891-94, 1897, and 1898. Ramsdell died in May of 1915. A retrospective of his work was held at the Grand Rapids Art Association in 1916.
