Banning studied at the Art Student's League in New York as well as at the Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design. She studied abroad in London and at Gadda's in Florence, Italy. She was well-known as a graphic artist, her work having been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and in Europe.

She was married the Old Lyme resident, Waldo Banning. She was the great-granddaughter of John Harper who founded Harper's Brothers Publishing Company.

She was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, the National Association of Women Artists, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the Society of American Etchers, the American Artists Professional League, and the Book Workers Guild of New York.
