Lyme Art Colony

Edward Simmons grew up in Concord, Massachusettes, graduated from Harvard when he was 22, and then traveled the American West for several years. He returned to Boston in 1878, determined to become an artist. After a brief period of study at the Museum School, he enrolled at the Academie Julian in Paris. From 1881 until 1886 Simmons kept a studio in a fishing village on the Brittany coast which attracted a number of American artists. Here he earned his reputation for picturing romanticized country subjects in open daylight. He married in his 30s and moved to Cornwall, in England, where another artists' colony was forming. After five years in England, he returned to the States and settled in New York. He was briefly associated with the art colony at Old Lyme.
