An academic painter, Paul Saling was born on July 19, 1876 in Germany where he studied art before immigrating, as a young man, to the United States and settling in Connecticut, first in Hartford and later in Old Lyme. He studied further with the Connecticut League of Art Students and a noted Connecticut teacher and artists of the time, Charles Noel Flagg, who was the director of the Flagg Evening School of Drawing for Men. Saling later became a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts with which he won prizes for painting in 1915, 1934, and 1935. he was also a member of the Springfield Art league, the American Federation of Arts, and the Salmagundi Club in new York City.
