Frederick Buchholz
Painter
(1901–1983) In Lyme: c. 1950 - 1983
Buchholz wanted to be an artist since age 5 when he got his first box of crayons. He studied privately in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later at the Art Students' League in New York. It was there that he met his wife, Else, who was also an artist.

In the 1920s, Buchholz designed textiles to earn a living, while painting on the weekends. He designed animal prints as well as blankets with cowboy scenes and ballerinas. He exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists in 1922; the Salons of America in 1922-1924.

In the late 1940s Buchholz and his wife came to Lyme and bought a vacation house and studio on Grassy Hill Road. By 1968 they lived in Lyme year-round. Buchholz was the president of the Lyme Art Association, and an active member of the Essex Art Association. His paintings hang in the Lyme Town Hall and Lyme Library.
