William H. Donahue was born on December 21, 1891. He studied under Henry Rankin Poore, E. L. Warner, and J. Noble.

He was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Modern Art, the Lyme Progressives, the Allied Artists of America, the Creative Artists Association, and the Lyme Art Association.

Donahue exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1924, the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts in 1925, the National Academy of Design in 1930, Los Angeles Museum of Art in 1924, the Brooklyn Museum in 1918, and the Riverside Museum in 1942, 1944, and 1946. He also exhibited at the American-British Art center in 1943, the Chappelier Gallery in 1944, and the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, Connecticut in 1945.

Donahue married Gertrude Nason and the two spent half the year in New York and the remainder in Old Lyme.
