Longman was the first woman sculptor to be accepted to full membership in the National Academy of Design. She created the well-known "Spirit of Victory" sculpture in Hartford, CT located at Bushnell Park.

She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with Lorado Taft, and worked in the ateleier of Daniel Chester French. She was the first woman sculptor elected to full member ship at the National Academy. She was also a member of the National Arts Club.

Longman specialized in architectural sculpture, war memorials, and friezes. Her 20,000 lb gilded bronze sculpture "Genius of Telegraphy" (1916) was made for the top of the Western Union (now AT&T) building in New York City. A close friend and colleague of Daniel Chester French, Longman contributed wreaths and eagles to the Lincoln Memorial.

She married in 1920 and often used her married name, Evelyn Batchelder.
