James Renwick Brevoort
American,
(1832–1918)
James Renwick Brevoort was born in Yonkers, New York. When he was 18 he began to study architecture under his cousin, a prominent architect. He received his certificate in architecture from New York University, but actually practiced very little. He had been attending classes at the National Academy of Design while he went through his training in architecture, and by 1856 he was exhibiting at the academy. In 1861 he was elected an associate member. Brevoort's work of this period is typical of the Hudson River school of painting. He spent summers seeking subjects in the Catskills, on Long Island, and in rural Connecticut. He taught perspective drawing at the academy for a time, and then moved with his wife to Florence, Italy. The two stayed in Italy until 1880, when they returned to settle in the painter's hometown.
