William Johnston

William Johnston was born in Boston, where his father was a well-known japanner and organ builder. He was trained in his father's shop and began a career as a portraitist when he was in his 20s. By his early 30s he was working in Connecticut. He traveled the Connecticut towns for several years and then, when he was almost 40, moved to Barbados. He died on that Caribbean island.
