Samuel Finley Breese Morse
American,
(1791–1872)
Samuel Finley Breese Morse, whose middle names are almost never spelled out, was born in Massachusettes but spent most of his adult life in Connecticut. Two things about him were clear from his early years on: he was a talented artist and he was exceptionally bright. At 14 he passed the entrance exam for Yale. He didn't actually enter the college until 15, and then sailed through, partially supporting himself by painting portrait miniatures on discs of ivory. On graduation, he announced to his father that he was cut out to be a painter, and the parent arranged for Samuel to study with the great Washington Allston - both in this country and, for four years, in England. Although he won a gold medal in London for a large classical Dying Hercules, he found when he returned to America at the end of the War of 1812, that he would have to paint portraits if he wanted to make a decent living. He worked both in Hartford and New Haven, and completed many well-known portraits over a long careeer.
