Gurdon Trumbull

American, (1841–1903)
In the late 1870s, at least one important art critic considered Gurdon Trumbull "the finest fish painter of America". Trumbull was born in Stonington, Connecticut, but moved with his family to Hartford when he was 11. Little information is available about his early years, but it is known that he studied art both in Hartford and New York - and that from the beginning he showed a keen interest in fish as subjects. This is how one writer of the day described his fish: "They are not dead, rigid outlines, hung on a wall or lying on a table...They are on fire with life; they are vigorous to every fin...There is nothing morbid or monotonous in them." Trumbull did not turn out a great many pictures in his lifetime, but his limited output is treasured.
