There is confusion among art historians about the name of this artist. Many reference works use the name Dawson Watson-Watson, but a 1912 catalogue from the St. Louis Museum calls him Dawson-Watson; and since he lived and taught in that city for some years, it seems reasonable that Dawson-Watson is correct. The artist was born in England, the son of a painter, and studied art both in England and France. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London when he was in his 20s; and also showed that same year in Paris. He came to America when he was 31, and taught and painted in New England for four years. He was associated with the Hartford Art Society and painted in Farmington and Manchester. He then returned to England for another four years, left for Canada and stayed for several years, and finally settled in St. Louis. Dawson-Watson made frequent visits to Texas while living in St. Louis and eventually moved to San Antonio.
