John Williamson came to America from Scotland as a child and spent most of his life in Brooklyn, New York. He began exhibiting at the National Academy of design in 1850 and was elected an Associate in 1861. His landscape subjects were chiefly views of New York, Pennsylvania and New England. His last days were spent in Glenwood-on-the-Hudson, a New York village.
