Jennie Stark was born 99 years ago in Lyme and today, still lives in the house she grew up in. Her father was Warren Stark, a farmer, first selectman, and state legislator in Hartford. Her mother was Alione Ely. She was one of six children.
When she was 17 she became a school teacher in a one-room school, in East Haddam. She taught for 40 years, mostly in junior high. For 37 years, she taught in the New Britain (CT) Public Schools.
During World War II, Jennie signed up for the WACs (Women's Army Corp). She served at Fort Dix in New Jersey for 3 years. After retirement she returned to the family home on Beaver Brook Road in Lyme.
While she was in her 30s, Stark took up rug hooking. She had been taught by her mother. To date she has made over 150 rugs. One of her most famous is her 1976 Bicentennial Rug, 2 feet by 4 feet, with 15 panels showing local historic scenes.
