Katherine Ludington was born in New York City on October 16, 1869. She attended Miss Comstock's School in New York and Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. She studied art at the Art Student's League where she studied under Frank Vincent DuMond. She gained recognition in the late 1890s as a portrait painter.

From 1917 until 1920 Ludington was the president of the Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association. She was known for her fiery letters to the editor and political savvy. She spent most of her time in Hartford lobbying for the cause. She was a foudner of the National League for Women Voters and served on its board from 1920 to 1934.

She later moved year-round to her home in Old Lyme and became an active member of the community there. She was president of the Ladies Library Association for 20 years, was an active member of the Congregatinal Church and the Old Lyme Grange.

During the 1920s she lived most of the year in New York, but summered in Old Lyme.
