Mahonri Young was born in Salt Lake City. Although Mahonri is remembered today principally as a sculptor, he was an active painter as well, frequently using cheerful watercolors to depict his immediate surroundings. "The George Burr House in Winter" is a painting of the Burr house on Lyme street as seen from the side porch of the Ely house across the street (per Gregory Smith). Snow covers the ground in front. A line of green bushes separates the house from the snowy yard.
