Fehrer painted this large, decorative figure painting in the same year, 1918, he and his family began a lifelong association with the artists' community of Pleasant Valley in Lyme. This portrait operates on several levels, the subject of the painting (and the backside of the canvas) is reflected through a mirror, a clear debt to the tradition of Vermeer. But "reflection" also refers to the meditative nature of the young woman herself.
