This very stylish portrait of a Parisian woman was painted around 1897 just before the artist arrived in Hartford where he had a studio at 700 Main Street and taught at the Hartford Art School. Griffin had spent ten years abroad, principally in France, where he painted a good deal in the villages of Fleury and Barbizon (he befriended Francois Millet there). "Portrait of a Lady" reflects the artist's academic training in Paris but the impressionistic brushwork is evidence of his growing identification with the American Impressionists.
