In 1892, Ernest Lawson first painted outdoors in Cos Cob as a student of the Impressionists John H. Twachtman and J. Alden Weir. Inspired by their examples, he went off to Paris. After a few months he decided that, “French influence kills if taken in too large a dose…I will go back to Connecticut and see what I can do.” Here, Lawson’s textured brushstrokes reflect his distinctive effort to balance French Impressionist painting technique with a direct response to the Connecticut landscape. The versatile artist was one of the only Impressionists to exhibit with The Eight, a group of mostly urban realists.
