Rook was regarded by his peers in the Lyme Art Colony as one of the finest painters of their group. Although primarily a landscape painter, the artists did numerous still lifes of household objects that he arranged in his studio. He submitted this work to numerous juried exhibitions in the 1920s, perhaps suggesting that he regarded it as one of his more successful pieces.
